Aaaand we’re wrapping up the food posts. Are you as hungry as I am? Because I really want some cheesy mushroom risotto right now. Mushrooms. Mmmmm.
I think gingerbread men are cute – and these are really cute – but I’ve had a bit of a horror of them ever since Jasper Fforde’s Nursery Crime series, in which the Gingerbread Man is a psychopathic serial killer who rips off people’s limbs. And I never know how to eat a gingerbread man (I have this problem with all animal/person shaped items of confectionery). If I eat its limbs first, I have to look at its smiley face and feel really bad, but if I bite the head off first, I feel really cruel too. There’s no winning, is there? Maybe that’s why Fforde made his Gingey a limb-ripper.
Also, I am almost 100% certain that these gingerbread men are identical to the ones used in the Wikipedia entry for “Gingerbread man”, which apparently come from Borough Market. Do all markets in London use the same gingerbread man cookie cutter?
These owl biscuits are really cute (but good lord I think I’d find them even more of a torture to eat than a gingerbread person)!
I was too chicken to try the chocolate bits on the paper plates, because we couldn’t figure out if they were free samples or like… actual chocolate bits that you buy in a bag. On hindsight I should just have been thickskinned and asked the lady. She probably would’ve chalked it up to me being an ignorant Oriental tourist
Anyway, I was very intrigued by what raw chocolate was, not having previously come across the concept. This helpful site informed me that raw chocolate was:
…chocolate products – normally bars – that are made from unroasted cocoa. They also tend to be exposed to minimal fermentation processes as well. All of this helps to keep the nutritional properties of cacao intact.
I can’t decide if this is newfangled hokum or if it’s genuinely true. But any excuse to eat more chocolate guiltlessly is good, so I’m going to have to look for this stuff in places that don’t require me to trek all the way to Hackney.

oddly enough a bag of jelly babies at lunch yesterday had us talking about how we placate our cruel and sadistic nature..
it’s TRUE. why else would anyone dream of making edible items shaped like living things? and what about things like hello panda ;________;
