Before hitting the market, however, my attention was predictably diverted by a bookshop at the start of the street:
I love indie bookstores, and the signboard alone had all the earmarks of belonging to a very promising indie bookstore, so I popped in for a look.
Very unfortunately (please don’t kill me) I couldn’t take any photos of the interior – not that it was expressly forbidden or anything, but just because 1) there were so many people inside and 2) it wasn’t the biggest of spaces, which would have made it very noticeable and disruptive if i did take pictures. So I decided that on this occasion I had no choice but to sacrifice my readers out of respect and practicality.
Evidently the Broadway Bookshop owners don’t particularly like/have never thought of putting up pictures of their interior, because I can’t seem to find a single one online. But you can have a look at their website here. It was a really, really lovely little place, with a wide range of mainstream and indie books, and absolutely beautiful decor. Open since November 2005 and thriving along with its community, this is a real old-fashioned bookshop. You feel transported in it – like you could lose yourself. If you happen to be familiar with Hackney, or feel tempted to visit Broadway Market after this, please do yourself a favour and visit this bookshop.
